The Tosinvest-San Raffaele Group Announces Two Sets of Monetary Awards to Support Scholars with Attending the 14th World Congress of the IASSID in Halifax, Canada

1 - Tosinvest-San Raffaele Group – JPPID Scholar’s Award

The Tosinvest-San Raffaele Group has announced the availability of a Scholar’s Award associated with the 14th World Congress of the IASSID to be held in Halifax, Canada in 2012.

The Award – in the sum of C$1,000 – will be presented to up to four authors (or divided among co-authors) who submit an innovative review paper that is judged as outstanding in its content and analysis and will be presented at the 14th World Congress of the IASSID in Halifax.  Papers selected for the Scholar’s Award will be presented at a special symposium during the Congress and eligible (following peer review) for publication in the Journal of Policy and Practice in Intellectual Disabilities.

Criteria for the papers include original analytic research on a topic in the area of policy or practice and intellectual or developmental disabilities, journal quality writing and formatting, lucidity of ideas, and development of a topic heretofore not fully explored.  Any topics that have direct relevance for policy and practice with respect to intellectual or developmental disabilities will be considered.  These might include, but are not limited to areas with international implications (e.g., voting rights, victimization); educational development (e.g., bilingual education, inclusion), advocacy (e.g., social and political practices), self-sustenance (e.g., entrepreneurship, pensioning), and quality of life.

“Young investigators” are particularly encouraged to enter this competition.   "Young Investigators" include pre-doctoral graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and academics or researchers within five years of the award of their doctoral level degree.

The Award funds are specifically targeted for helping defray the costs of attending the 14th World Congress of the IASSID (e.g., registration fee, travel costs, lodging).  The Scholar’s Award recipients will be responsible for registering for the Congress and presenting their paper at the Tosinvest Awards symposium.   Costs up to C$1,000 will be covered.

Persons interested in this competition should submit a 3-page précis of their paper with a cover email to the Editor of JPPID, at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it by January 25, 2012.   Final full papers for the competition should be submitted to the JPPID Editor no later than 15 March 2012.  Papers to be considered for publication in JPPID after the World Congress are to be submitted via the normal manuscript submission process and are subject to peer review.   All papers submitted for the Tosinvest Award competition should be journal quality (up to 20 pages, double spaced, with citations) and include an Introduction (considering the issue), Literature Analysis and Discussion, and Conclusions (with recommendations). Papers are to be in English.  Papers will be judged by members of the JPPID Editorial Board and awardees will be notified in May 2012. All awardees will be invited to present their papers at a special Tosinvest Awards symposium held during the Congress.  Awardees are permitted to update their papers for the Congress presentation.

2 - Henry Wisniewski Memorial Paper Award

The Tosinvest-San Raffaele Group also announces one C$500 award for an outstanding and innovative paper in the area of health, medical or biological research.   The paper will be chosen from those presented at the Congress and nominated by the Health Special Interest Research Group for the Henry Wisniewski Memorial Award.  It will be author’s responsibility to submit his or her paper for consideration for this award.  To be considered papers must be submitted no later than June 5, 2012.  Papers should be submitted to the JPPID Editor (This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
