Course Description

This two part (morning and afternoon) interactive workshop will be delivered by a multi-national group of researchers and expert-practitioners working in the field of parents and parenting with intellectual disabilities.  The focus of this workshop is on knowledge exchange and implementation: utilizing knowledge from research to improve outcomes for parents with intellectual disabilities and their children.  Participants will hear about the current state of knowledge and latest research in the field, and contribute to a discussion of gaps between research and practice. Participants will then learn about breakthrough ‘knowledge exchange and implementation’ initiatives in North America, Europe and Australia. Common obstacles to the spread and implementation of knowledge will be identified, and promising strategies for promoting best practices will be discussed.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand the gap between research and practice in the field of parents with intellectual disabilities.
  • Relate to initiatives in North America, Europe and Australia that close the gap between research and practice, and build systems capacity to support parents with intellectual disabilities and their children.
  • Understand strategies and tools for assessing practitioner, agency and systems capacity (e.g., assets/resources, limitations/gaps) for supporting parents with intellectual disabilities and their children.
  • Relate to practical strategies and resources for promoting knowledge exchange and implementation at the level of the practitioner, agency and human service system.
  • Explore directions for future research
